Short of the Week
Here’s our first genie short. Check back weekly to read more and learn about everyone in our genie world. Enjoy!
The wind was screaming at her, so shrill and angry that Kallan had to stick her fingers in her ears. Below the wind, the ocean was howling in pain and clawing at her with big, salty, hard waves.
“What’s wrong?” she wanted to scream back, but she knew better than to draw attention to herself. It was best to keep going until she could find him.
She bent her knees and crouched down, gaining speed in the water with her invisible surfboard. Her long dark hair whipped her face in protest. The faster she went, the more it stung, but Kallan didn’t care. She had no choice. Instead, she closed her eyes and took several deep breaths, counting to ten. It was a trick her caretaker had taught her long ago, when she first learned she was a genie, and it always helped her when she needed to calm down.
“Ca-caw! Ca-caw!” the piercing sound of a bird in distress broke Kallan’s meditation. She looked up, in time to see thousands of black birds falling out of the sky, about to plunge into the ocean. All around her were wide red eyes, eyes of creatures clearly not ready to die, but there was nothing she could do.
Then, in the midst of all the red eyes, was a pair of blue ones. “Bo!” Kallan called out. His eyes were glazed over, his wings broken and hung limp as he fell, but Kallan recognized her lost pet immediately.
Anger and adrenaline pumped through Kallan’s veins, and she lost feeling in the rest of her body. The ends of her hair began to freeze, and it spread all the way to the top of her head, so that her dark locks had become icicles, sharp and ready to attack.
Kallan lost control of herself, and all she could see was Bo. Who would do such a thing? Hurting innocent birds? She wouldn’t let Bo die. He was her first real friend, and she had always suspected that story that he chose to leave her without saying good-bye was untrue.
A blast of power propelled Kallan and her surfboard, and she held out her arms for Bo, ignoring the pricks and cuts from the beaks of the other birds as they bounced off her and crashed into the water. She would figure out what happened later. For now, all that mattered was Bo.
“Gotcha!” she said, catching Bo and jetting as far away from the birds as possible. Cradling her bird in her arms, Kallan forgot to look where she was going. Her surfboard was still moving at full speed when they reached the beach. Sand didn’t slow it down, and they ran right into a tall palm tree. Kallan felt a sharp pain in her left temple, and then everything went black.
Not sure what it means, but I’ll just assume it’s a kick-ass sticker symbolizing Young Adult fiction! Mostly, I just wanted to find a way to mention that I’m in Australia right now, soaking up the sun and enjoying summertime weather ;) Merry Christmas!!! ~SR
I’ve been meaning to read more YA novels, since I’m attempting to write one. And Random House has taken care of that need! I got an internship today at Wendy Lamb Books, and they gave me 10 books to read over break. So excited!
PS: Check back later this month for some free short stories :)

Wednesday Wish Day
Today, I’m flying to California for Thanksgiving. I wish I could teleport so I didn’t have to wait at the airport for five hours and then sit on a plane for another five hours! Here’s hoping the in-flight movie is good :) Come to think of it, maybe that’s a more realistic wish…
We saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 today, and it was amazing! Thought I’d share a trailer here, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should! Even non-Harry Potter fans thought it was a good movie :) Can’t believe I have to wait a whole year to see Part 2! ~SR
Not everything genie is mythical or skanky. For those of you who are nerds like me, check out Project Genie, “a computer research project started in 1964 the University of California, Berkeley by J.C.R. Licklider, the head of DARPA at the time.” -SR
Just to put all of y(our) minds at ease, our fair-haired teenage genie Camille will be nothing like Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie. No way! We want to steer clear of all of the crazy oversexed genie stereotypes. Every now and then I google “teenage genie” and I find images from Aladdin (okay, I can’t really claim this is oversexed), I Dream of Jeannie, pictures of Christina Aguilera in the 90s, information on genie costumes (flowy pants and scarves, belly dancing gear), and a few links about Russian sex videos. Here’s hoping that we can revamp the female genie image and one day reign over Google!
p.s. Barbara Eden (Jeannie) pictured above is going to be releasing a memoir soonish. Should be interesting!
I could not resist putting this up. Not only is it ridiculously entertaining, but it is a good example of what our genies are NOT going to be like. Though, to be honest, I’m liking the creepy genie’s shades…so maybe Camille will sport some sweet aviators in the first book?

We have names!
After weeks of struggling, we have finally decided on our teeny genies’ names: Camille and Kallan. So you can get as excited about it as we are, I’ll provide you with a little background.
Camille is a French and Latin name. A variant of Camilla, it means free-born, noble, and virginal. Our Camille is a blonde-hair, blue-eyed beauty, who is also impulsive, free-spirited, and edgy (who doesn’t love an edgy girl?)
Kallan is a Gaelic name that means both river and powerful in battle. Our Kallan is the opposite of Camille. A logical girl with her dark locks and tanned skin, she is popular among all her friends.
And now I’ve just given some big hints about the story (ooooh). But what I really want to know is, what do you think of the names??
